Where do you feel you are able to make a difference in your athletics department?
After teaching & coaching volleyball for over 16 years, I've noticed the void of minority female administrators at my schools that I've worked at in high school and college level. It is my charge and goal to be the face to provide hope for the future generations to believe that they too can work hard and achieve their goals. The ear that allows a new coach or student-athlete to ask the tough & challenging questions and allow the comfort for them to speak freely. The 'loud mouth' advocating for best practices for all coaches, student-athletes and staff so that they know whether it be in the stands, in the board room or in the classroom, there is someone there to support them and has their best interest at hand, both on and off the athletic field. I am here to provide an opportunity that so many are not able to partake in. Providing the open door that I didn't always see open for myself is what I've fallen in love with what the NAIA and the Heart of America Conference in all it provides it's student-athletes. Missouri Valley College has allowed me to grow professionally and personally in the last 9 years, so it's only right for me to pay it forward and provide the same opportunity for others in becoming a well-rounded young female or male entering into today's society.

I'm able to help student-athletes build and monetize their brand for NIL, serve the community through ASA efforts, and advocate mental health wellness. Building stronger relationships with student-athletes grants me to know and serve them better at the administrative level. My academic and athletic background is unique and it allows me to contribute a different perspective to the athletic department. "I believe in leading by example: demonstrating the character and actions of a confident, capable woman in leadership."
Alexis Garrison Evergreen (Wash.)
In your new role as SWL, what responsibilities have you taken on?
How many roles do you now have, including SWL? 4
Where do you feel you are able to make a difference in your athletics department?
As the SWL at Evergreen State College, I am making a difference on campus, in the CCC conference, and the NAIA by being a role model for all female students and student-athletes. I believe in leading by example: demonstrating the character and actions of a confident, capable woman in leadership. I choose to bring my best in everything I do which means putting a smile on my face and stepping with my best foot forward no matter the situation. When I fail or make a mistake, I embrace it and choose to use it as a life lesson. In coaching and leadership, people are always watching so having an opportunity to demonstrate that perfection is not the goal but rather evolving, learning, and growing is very impactful. I strive to embrace not just success but also the loss. These are the moments which truly refine our character. I have modeled and preached to my team the importance of character and that we choose how we will conduct ourselves. The team chose to embrace being women of strong character. It is with great pride that we were able to practice this commitment through our Geoduck Recognition at each game regardless of whether or not we won. The Geoduck Recognition allowed athletes and coaches to be reminded after each game the true meaning of competition. And in that moment, to put their egos aside and acknowledge the strengths and skills of each athlete no matter what side of the court they were on. This was acknowledged by our conference and the NAIA when our team received the Sportsmanship Award two years in a row.

Where do you feel you are able to make a difference in your athletics department?
At Point University, it is our mission to educate students for Christ-centered service and leadership throughout the world. Since taking on the role of SWL, I have put great effort into ensuring our student-athletes serve out this mission. I have been able to do this by revamping our Association of Student-Athletes, also known as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. With this committee, student-athletes are not only living out our mission through various service efforts, but they also have a voice within our department. In addition, I was chosen by our conference to attend the NAIA’s inaugural Governance and Leadership Academy. Through this academy, I received first-hand experience on NAIA governance and strategic initiatives, while also participating in leadership development activities along said many other minority and female athletic administrators. Being able to participate in this academy and share my experience with the conference and athletics staff has been truly rewarding and a great contributor to my success today.

"I am a female leader that [female student-athletes] can see in a respected position of responsibility, as well as a female they can confide in or ask for advice."
Hannah Miller Indiana Wesleyan
In your new role as SWL, what responsibilities have you taken on? New responsibilities include oversight of our campus ASA and creation and implementation of initiatives and programming specifically for female student-athletes and staff (female student-athlete retreat, regular gatherings of staff, etc.). Generally, part of the role is to be present with and available to our female student-athletes and staff (hanging out at practices, travel with teams, host teams for dinner, etc.). Where do you feel you are able to make a difference in your athletics department?
One of the ways I make a difference as SWL is simply by being a visible female leader. Not all female student-athletes have a female on their coaching staff, let alone a female head coach. I am a female leader that they can see in a respected position of responsibility, as well as a female they can confide in or ask for advice. More tangibly, I create intentional opportunities that contribute to the personal and professional development of our female student-athletes and staff.

"Bridge the gap between athletics and the business office."
Keri Nester Brewton-Parker (Ga.)
In your new role as SWL, what responsibilities have you taken on? I participate in weekly meetings with our Associate Athletic Director and VP of Athletics. Where do you feel you are able to make a difference in your athletics department?
In this role, I have become more involved in the athletic department than I was as just a coach. This opportunity has allowed me to bring areas up where we may have a disconnect in athletics and also find ways to solve those problems. This position has allowed me to bridge the gap between the athletic department and our fiscal services department. Athletics and Fiscal Services work very closely together regarding student accounts, purchase orders, and vendors. This role has allowed me to be the "middle man" between the two departments for communication and process improvement. We, as an athletic department, have made changes to our processes to make things easier and more efficient. I'm so proud of our coaches that have embraced the changes implemented!

I am able to make a difference in many different ways on campus. Since I am full-time in administration, we are able to offer our coaches and students more availability whether it's myself or our Athletic Director. I have been able to streamline many different processes within our department which has allowed us to be more intentional in our relationships with other campus departments, which has greatly benefited our entire university. Since beginning in this role, I have been able to take some workload off of our Athletic Director allowing him to focus on some bigger-picture ideas and opportunities to benefit our student-athletes, coaches and campus community.

After my first year in the role of Assistant Athletics Director at Taylor University, I was blessed to be promoted to the Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator. In addition, outside of our department, the new job classification has earned me a seat at the table for campus-wide leadership and planning committees. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to work with and interface with many senior leadership-level administrators as well as members of the Taylor University Board of Trustees in many capacities over the last two years.

I think to date, being able to have a role on the university's strategic planning steering committee and being included on a Board of Trustee taskforce have really widened my understanding of the university all while allowing me to speak boldly for our department at the level of leadership where big picture, long-term decisions are made. It was an honor to be the voice for our student-athletes in those spaces and hopefully groundwork was laid that will allow Taylor University Athletics to continue to move forward.
