Corban (Ore.) Clinches Quarterfinal in Three over Ave Maria (Fla.)
MESA, Ariz. - Corban (Ore.) secured its place in the NAIA Beach Volleyball Invitational semifinals with a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Ave Maria (Fla.) on April 24, winning the dual by taking the first three completed flights.
The quarterfinal began with Pairs 2 and 4 on the sand, setting the tone for Corban’s push to clinch early. In Pair 2, Allyson Reid and Gabi Engels delivered the most decisive result of the afternoon, overwhelming Ave Maria’s Ryan Getz and Ines Lopes in straight sets, 21-8, 21-15. With one point secured, Corban turned attention to the other opening flight, where Pair 4 provided the dual’s tightest battle. Erin Scott and Emily Blagg won the first set 21-14, dropped the second 18-21, and then held on in a tense third-set finish to defeat Ava Winkler and Beatriz Rissi 15-13, giving Corban a 2-0 advantage in the overall match.
Once both Pairs 2 and 4 concluded, the remaining flights—Pairs 1, 3 and 5—took the court. Corban’s Pair 3 of Alexis Adebodun and Cammie Masanda made sure there would be no opening for a comeback, beating Ave Maria’s Elle Malczewski and Greta Heiney 21-11, 21-13. That result supplied the third point Corban needed, officially clinching the quarterfinal at 3-0.
With the dual decided, the remaining matches were stopped before completion. In Pair 1, Corban’s Emma Bischoff and Emmi Marks were in front of Adriana Bravo and Mara Delyon when play was truncated, holding a 21-19 first-set win and an 11-8 lead in the second. Pair 5 was also truncated, with Corban’s Jordan Faircloth and Rebecca Wilber leading Abbey Grose and Maylis DeTar, having taken the first set 21-10 and moving ahead 18-6 in the second.
The Warriors will play in the semifinals on Saturday, April 24, at 10 a.m. PT.
