Tennessee Wesleyan Tops IU Southeast, Advances in World Series Bracket

LEWISTON, Idaho-  Tennessee Wesleyan kept its Avista NAIA World Series run alive Wednesday night, pulling away late to secure a 10–3 win over Indiana Southeast and advance further in the bracket at Harris Field.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first inning when David Ballenilla lined an RBI single to left, bringing home Rob Gordon for a 1-0 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan added on in the third behind Allan Gil Fernandez, who launched a two-run homer to left to score Hagen Escoto, followed later in the inning by a Josh Shelly RBI single to center that made it 4-0.

IU Southeast stayed quiet early but climbed back into it in the sixth. Bryson Arnette singled up the middle to drive in Coulter Hamilton, and Caden Lockwood followed with an RBI single to left. The Grenadiers’ third run came on a fielding error at first base that allowed Travis Kellems to score, trimming the deficit to 4–3 and putting real pressure on Tennessee Wesleyan.

Tennessee Wesleyan erupted in the eighth inning. Allan Gil Fernandez was the first to score in the frame on a wild pitch. Gordon then delivered the biggest swing of the frame, ripping a two-run double down the left-field line. Ballenilla added another RBI single, and two more runs scored on a throwing error by the Grenadiers, turning a one-run game into a 10-3 Bulldogs cushion.

Gil Fernandez led Tennessee Wesleyan’s 14-hit attack behind a 4-for-5 performance, including a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Gordon scored three times and drove in two, while Ballenilla went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. On the mound, Colton Brumley picked up the win after allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings, while Bradley Johnson closed the final 3.2 inning to earn the save.

Indiana Southeast finished with eight hits but committed five errors, two of which directly contributed to the decisive eighth inning.

TWU will return to the diamond on Thursday against the loser of the No. 10 William Carey (Miss.) versus No. 5 Southeastern (Fla.) contest.
