IU Southeast Seals Monday Night Game Behind Early Scoring, Trumps Tennessee Wesleyan

LEWISTON, Idaho- Indiana Southeast used a three-run first inning and steady pitching to blank Tennessee Wesleyan, 5-0, on Monday night at Harris Field.

The Grenadiers jumped in front immediately against Tennessee Wesleyan starter Cameron Goffar. Joel Johnson opened the scoring when Trevor Goodwin lined an RBI single to right, then Bryson Arnette followed with another RBI single through the right side to make it 2-0. They added a third run on the same sequence when Chance Bentley grounded into a double play, allowing Goodwin to score for a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

Indiana Southeast tacked on two more in the fourth. Johnson drove an RBI double to left to score Gabe Yonto, and Goodwin delivered again with an RBI single to push the margin to 5–0. That was all the offense the Grenadiers would need.

On the mound, Luca Sandrella (5-0) set the tone with five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five. Jake Gothrup earned his third save by finishing the final four innings, giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out five to complete the shutout. Tennessee Wesleyan managed only four hits and went 0-for-3 in run production, striking out 10 times and leaving six runners on base.

Goffar (9-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks in four innings. Isaiah Williams was a bright spot in relief, throwing four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and allowing only two hits.

Goodwin led IU Southeast offensively with a 2-for-4 night and two RBIs, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Indiana Southeast finished with 10 hits. The game also featured a lightning delay in the bottom of the fifth, but the Grenadiers’ early cushion and bullpen work kept the outcome in control throughout.

On Tuesday, the Grenadiers will face Southeastern (Fla.) at 6 p.m., while Tennessee Wesleyan matches up with Johnson (Tenn.) at 11 a.m.
