Warriors Score Nine in Opening Frame, Cruise Past Grizzlies in Night Game

LEWISTON, Idaho- Lewis-Clark State and Georgia Gwinnett met for the first time in Avista NAIA World Series history Saturday night at Harris Field, and the Warriors quickly took control, rolling to a 12-1 victory behind a nine-run first inning and a complete-game effort from Mason Goodson.

Lewis-Clark State wasted no time putting pressure on the Grizzlies, sending 13 batters to the plate in the opening frame. Brandon Nguyen opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field before the Warriors continued the surge.

Jackson Reed added a two-run double before a fielding error brought home another run. A wild pitch later scored another, and Nguyen followed with a two-run triple to extend the lead even further. RBI hits from Jackson Jaha and Izzy Madariaga capped the inning as Lewis-Clark State built a 9-0 advantage before Georgia Gwinnett could record the third out.

Georgia Gwinnett starter Gavin LeBlanc lasted just one-third of an inning and was charged with seven runs, four earned, as the Warriors capitalized early.

With the large lead in hand, Goodson settled in and controlled the remainder of the game. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six on only 89 pitches.

Georgia Gwinnett’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Chris Tillery connected on a solo home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 9-1.

Lewis-Clark State answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Madariaga launched a solo homer to right before Ryan Prescott lined a two-run double down the right-field line to extend the lead to 12-1.

The Warriors finished with 14 hits, including doubles from Jaha, Madariaga, Reed, and Prescott, along with home runs from Nguyen and Madariaga. Nguyen paced the offense with three RBI while going 2-for-3 with a homer, triple, and two runs scored.

The Warriors are back in action on Monday against No. 1 Taylor (Ind.) at 11 a.m. PT as both teams look to advance and avoid elimination.
