Simao Scores Late Second-Half Goal to Send Georgia Gwinnett to Quarters, 2-1, over Cumberland (Tenn.)
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Josefa Simao's 82nd-minute goal made it 2-1 at Georgia Gwinnett was able to hold on, beating Cumberland (Tenn.) 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2025 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship in Orange Beach, Ala.
Each team scored in the first half, but with nine minutes to spare on the game clock, Simao gathered a perfectly placed free kick from Michael Mallaburn in the middle of the six-yard box, shooting toward the right post to secure the game-winning score.
Georgia Gwinnett (14-2-4) advanced despite being outshot 10-7, but of Cumberland's 10 shots, only one was on frame. Georgia Gwinnett put four shots on goal, as Cumberlands fell to 14-5-3 to end the season.
The Phoenix took an early lead in the game, when Miquel Gelabert scored unassisted in the 33rd minute, a goal that the Grizzlies answered 11 minutes later, in the 44th, hwne Gabriel Martins put one across to tie the game at intermission.
Victor Darub picked up the win in goal for GGC, making one save while allowing a goal.
Georgia Gwinnett will play Grand View (Iowa) on Thursday in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. CT.
