Missouri Valley Sweeps Campbellsville (Ky.) to Advance to Semifinal
KANSAS CITY, Mo. [BOX SCORE] - Missouri Valley Vikings swept Campbellsville (Ky.) Tigers 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 on Thursday afternoon at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, handing the Tigers (28-4) a straight-sets loss in a matchup that tightened as the match continued.
Missouri Valley (25-5) set the tone with a cleaner, more physical first set, hitting .344 behind 16 kills while holding Campbellsville to .250. Missouri Valley finished with 43 digs to Campbellsville’s 27 and piled up 12 block assists compared with 10 for the Tigers.
Campbellsville’s best offensive stretch came in the second set, when it raised its efficiency to .321 (12 kills, 3 errors on 28 swings) and pushed Missouri Valley deep into the frame. Denzel Madrigal carried much of that load, finishing with 15 kills on .343 hitting, and Pedro Zavatini was efficient as well with five kills on .444. But Missouri Valley answered with its highest-output set of the day, posting 20 kills on .382 hitting to secure the 25-22 win and a two-set cushion. Setter Leonardo Goncalves directed the offense effectively, totaling 36 assists while adding a service ace and helping Missouri Valley maintain tempo even when rallies extended.
The third set was the most competitive on the scoreboard, but it also featured the sharpest drop in Campbellsville’s efficiency. The Tigers hit just .091 in the set (14 kills, 10 errors on 44 attempts). Missouri Valley’s attack cooled as well to .111, yet the Vikings managed the closing points better, leaning on Luca Hasse’s terminal swings and Joao Tavares’ two aces to finish the sweep 25-23.
Individually, Hasse was the match’s top scorer and most consistent finisher, posting 18 kills on .389 and adding five block assists for 20.5 points. Tavares complemented him with six kills on .400 attack percentage, two aces, and five block assists, while Loan Fargier added 10 kills and a team-high 11 digs. For Campbellsville, Madrigal led the way offensively, with Ayoub Hamadache (seven kills) and Savvas Christou (six kills) providing additional volume. Alonzo Vega anchored the Tigers’ offense with 35 assists, and Andrew Ovalle contributed 10 digs.
With the win, Missouri Valley advances to the semifinals on Friday, May 30, at 4 p.m. CT, while Campbellsville is eliminated from tournament play.
