Saint Xavier (Ill.) Advances to Semifinal on Five Set Win over Mount Mercy (Iowa)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa [BOX SCORE] - Saint Xavier (Ill.) Cougars outlasted Mount Mercy (Iowa) Mustangs in a five-set battle Thursday morning at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, pulling out a 3–2 win (22–25, 25–16, 22–25, 25–13, 15–13) in a match that swung sharply with momentum and efficiency shifts from set to set.

Mount Mercy (23–5) struck first behind a crisp opening set, hitting .333 with 16 kills and protecting a late lead to take the set 25–22. Guglielmo Illotti immediately established himself as the focal point, and Mount Mercy’s side-out game looked steady enough to absorb Saint Xavier’s early pressure. But the match quickly turned in the second set as Mount Mercy’s offense stalled; the Mustangs hit .000 (8 kills, 8 errors) and Saint Xavier leveled the match with a 25–16 response, using cleaner first contacts and a more balanced kill distribution to keep Mount Mercy out of system.

Set three mirrored the opener. Mount Mercy regained control with its best attacking stretch of the day (.364) and again edged Saint Xavier 25–22, leaning heavily on Illotti’s termination while getting timely contributions around him. The Cougars delivered their most dominant set of the match in set four, hitting .483 with 15 kills and just one error while holding Mount Mercy to .097. That surge forced a fifth set: Saint Xavier finished at .307 as a team compared with Mount Mercy’s .205.

The deciding set saw Saint Xavier closing 15–13. Mount Mercy hit .200 in the fifth and stayed within striking distance, but Saint Xavier’s ability to side out and limit mistakes late helped it escape with the win. The Cougars also brought more pressure from the service line, finishing with seven aces (though also 16 service errors), while Mount Mercy recorded three aces and nine service errors.

Individually, Illotti carried a massive load for Mount Mercy, posting 33 kills on 66 swings while hitting .348 and adding 12 digs, accounting for the clear majority of Mount Mercy’s offensive punch. Gabor Toth and Curdin Acklin added nine kills apiece, though both were held to modest efficiencies as Saint Xavier’s block and defensive reads tightened in the final two sets. Setter Gustavo Kehl Bauer ran the offense with 54 assists and contributed 11 digs, adding to Mount Mercy's total of 62 digs overall.

Saint Xavier (30–3) countered with a deeper, more efficient attack led by Caydann Cox, who delivered 26 kills on 54 attempts with just one error, hitting an elite .463 while also serving three aces. Donte Jennings added 10 kills and 10 digs, and Matt Pennala chipped in 15 kills. Setter Cameron Daniels directed the Cougars with 58 assists and helped anchor a defense that produced 54 digs. At the net, Saint Xavier’s presence was steady across the lineup, totaling four solo blocks and 24 block assists, including eight block assists from Tysen Myers and five from Pennala.

With the loss, Mount Mercy (Iowa) is eliminated from tournament play. Saint Xavier advances to the semifinals on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. CT with the win.
