The Master's (Calif.) Sweeps St. Thomas (Fla.) to Advance to Semifinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. [BOX SCORE ] - The Master’s (Calif.) Mustangs put together a sweep of St. Thomas (Fla.) Bobcats on Thursday afternoon at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, winning 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 to move to 24-1 while handing the Bobcats a straight-sets loss that dropped them to 24-6.

The Master’s hit .474 as a team with 45 kills and only eight errors on 78 swings, never dipping below .308 in any set and exploding to .577 in the opener and .538 in the third. St. Thomas, by contrast, managed a .066 team hitting percentage (23 kills, 18 errors on 76 attempts) and was under .120 in all three sets, including a negative mark in set two. 

Trace Oswald and Isaac Seltzer set the tone for the Mustangs’ attack. Oswald finished with 13 kills on 18 swings while hitting .611 and added an ace, while Seltzer led all players with 15 kills on 27 attempts at .481. The Master’s also got efficient secondary scoring from Cooper Saelzler (six kills on .500) and Garrett Beall (five kills on .500), and setter Matthew Hamm directed the offense with 39 assists as the Mustangs repeatedly found clean looks against a St. Thomas block. At the net, The Master’s piled up 16 total blocks (one solo, 15 assists), with Beall involved in five blocks (one solo, four assisted) and multiple others contributing.

For St. Thomas, Gabriel Negrao produced nine kills but had seven errors on 29 attempts, and Kaelen Ingram had six kills but also seven errors on 20 swings. Ibrahim Perez also contributed offensively, scoring three kills on four attempts (.500), and setter Rafael Obrusnik posted 20 assists with an ace. Overall, St. Thomas was limited to two service aces to The Master's three. 

With the loss, St. Thomas is eliminated from tournament play. The Master's advances to the semifinals on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. CT against Saint Xavier (Ill.) for a repeat of the 2025 national championship match.
