William Penn (Iowa) Outlasts St. Thomas (Fla.) in Five Set Thriller
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa [BOX SCORE] - William Penn (Iowa) Statesmen outlasted St. Thomas (Fla.) Bobcats in a five-set thriller Wednesday afternoon at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, pulling off a 3–2 win (37–35, 22–25, 25–17, 20–25, 15–12). The victory moved William Penn to 19–8, while St. Thomas fell to 24–5 after a match that swung repeatedly on long, high-pressure stretches—none bigger than the marathon opening set.
Set 1 set the tone for the entire afternoon. William Penn hit .295 in the opener (17 kills, 4 errors on 44 swings), but St. Thomas generated far more volume, posting 25 kills on 56 attempts. The difference was the number of attack errors (14), which kept the door open through an extended sequence, as William Penn claimed a 37–35 victory for a new championship record.
St. Thomas responded in Set 2 with its cleanest, most controlled stretch of the match, winning 25–22 while hitting .242. William Penn’s offense dipped in that set, managing only .040 (8 kills, 7 errors), and the match leveled with St. Thomas looking more comfortable in first-ball situations. Any momentum, however, was short-lived. William Penn delivered its best set of the day in Set 3, turning in a blistering .458 hitting percentage (12 kills, 1 error on 24 attempts) to take a 25–17 lead in the match. St. Thomas, by contrast, struggled to terminate, hitting .036 with nine errors, and suddenly the match flipped again.
The fourth set became another reset point. William Penn couldn’t sustain its Set 3 efficiency, hitting .000 in Set 4 (10 kills, 10 errors), and St. Thomas capitalized with a 25–20 win behind a steadier .189 clip. That forced a fifth, where St. Thomas’ offense finally ran out of margin: the Bobcats hit .000 in the deciding set (7 kills, 7 errors), and William Penn’s cleaner finish—.261 in Set 5—carried the day, 15–12.
Statistically, St. Thomas produced more kills (70–55) and more total points (89.5–76.5), but the match turned on mistakes and endgame execution. St. Thomas committed 43 attack errors to William Penn’s 24, a gap that erased the advantage created by its higher kill totals. Service pressure also leaned toward St. Thomas (7 aces to 2), but it came with 19 service errors.
William Penn’s offense was led by Tommy Fellows, who delivered 14 kills on .379 attack percentage and added 13 digs, providing a stable outlet when the match became chaotic. Emilio Spanner (15 kills) and Ben Brinkman (10 kills) supplied volume, and Britten Beallis contributed a well-rounded line with seven kills on .312 plus 11 total blocks (2 solo, 9 assisted) to go with 13.5 points. At the center of William Penn’s ability to keep the match playable was setter Brady Zell, who logged 46 assists and 11 digs while helping guide an attack that, while only .200 overall, found timely peaks—most notably in the third set and late in the fifth.
For St. Thomas, Kaelen Ingram carried a massive load with 23 kills, while Gabriel Negrao added 17, and Michael Marsans had 14, along with a match-high three aces. But the heavy usage came with heavy error totals across the pins. Rafael Obrusnik orchestrated the offense with 58 assists and added 15 digs, while Cameron Gray anchored the backcourt with 18 digs.
William Penn (Iowa) closes out pool play 1-1 and awaits the result of Thursday's Pool B match, where St. Thomas will take on The Master's (Calif.) to determine who advances to the semifinals. Should The Master's win, they will advance to the semifinal, however, if St. Thomas wins, the teams will play out a tiebreak Friday morning to determine who will advance.
