CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) threw a perfect game to help No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University split its games in collegiate softball action Tuesday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Cougars fell to Saint Anselm College (N.Y.), 5-4, in eight innings in the first game, but shut down Adrian College (Mich.), 2-0, in the late match-up to move to 3-3 overall this season.

Brown’s performance is the first perfect game thrown by a SXU softball pitcher since former standout Ashley Shearer did it against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on March 30, 2007. She racked up 12 strikeouts over the seven-inning affair en route to her perfect outing. Freshman centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) led SXU offensively posting three total hits, including a double, and three runs scored.

In the loss to Saint Anselm Tuesday, the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) brought home Lauret from third with a RBI single. However, the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the frame off a fielding error by SXU and then took a 4-1 lead with three more runs in the bottom of the second after another error and an illegal pitch helped keep the inning alive.

Saint Xavier would tie the game in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by sophomore infielder Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) and a pair of RBI singles by Hunter and freshman second baseman Holly Hilden (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North). After a scoreless seventh inning, the game went extra frames. A Cougar throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the eighth allowed the game-winning run to cross home plate. Sophomore righty Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) threw all 7.2 innings for SXU and gave up four hits, five runs (two earned) and three walks with 11 strikeouts. She falls to 2-2 this year with the loss.

Brown got her first win of the season (1-0) in the late game against Adrian, striking out 12 of the 21 batters. Hinton got the Cougars on the board early on with a RBI single in the bottom of the first to score Lauret from third base. Junior shortstop Ashley Sullivan (Lemont, Ill./UW-Parkside/Lemont) would provide some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single to left field to score Hinton from second. Lauret finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Saint Xavier (3-3 overall) takes Wednesday off and returns to action on Thursday, March 1, with a morning doubleheader against University of Michigan-Dearborn. The first of the two games starts at 9 a.m. (eastern) in Clermont, Fla.
