College of Idaho Erases Three Run Deficit Against British Columbia With Big Fifth Inning

COLUMBUS, Ga. - [Watch On-Demand] College of Idaho (38-20) erased a three-run deficit with a decisive fifth inning and held on late to edge British Columbia, 4-3, on Thursday at South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings as British Columbia (31-23) starter Carleen Murray and the College of Idaho pitching staff traded zeros.

British Columbia finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 1-0 lead after a throwing error at third base by College of Idaho allowed an unearned run to score.

The Thunderbirds added to their advantage in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 3-0. Jillian Matsubara drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and Kennedy Laird followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate another.

British Columbia created scoring opportunities throughout the game with patience at the plate, drawing five walks and consistently applying pressure without relying on extra-base hits. College of Idaho answered immediately in the bottom half of the fifth and turned the game around with one swing.

With runners on base, Marti Anderson ripped a double down the right-field line to drive in three runs and tie the game at 3-3. The inning was aided by defensive miscues, as both teams committed two errors, and at least one run in the frame was unearned.

The Yotes completed the comeback in the sixth inning. Isabella Fazzio reached base and later scored when Hallie Campbell lined an RBI single to right field for the go-ahead run, giving College of Idaho a 4-3 lead.

British Columbia was unable to respond in the seventh as the Yotes closed out the victory. College of Idaho used two pitchers in the win. Starter Kina Watts worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out three.

Reliever Drew Williams earned the victory with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits. Williams walked three batters, but British Columbia could not capitalize on the opportunities.

Murray took the loss for the Thunderbirds despite recording eight strikeouts over six innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits and one walk. Campbell led the College of Idaho offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including the game-winning RBI, while also scoring a run. Anderson delivered the biggest hit of the game with her three-run double that erased the Yotes’ 3-0 deficit. British Columbia finished with six hits and five walks but left key opportunities on the table late in the game.
