Keiser Women’s Tennis Completes Red Banner Redemption in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala.- Perennial bridesmaid Keiser (Fla.) finally got the ring.

The Seahawks, runner-up to Georgia Gwinnett in each of the past seven finals, defeated Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 4-1 Saturday afternoon in the championship round of the 45th annual UTR Sports NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship.

Keiser dropped the doubles point but rallied with straight-set victories on the first four singles courts. Senior Alexandra Melnikova clinched on court two with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Martina Cortal.

"It's all heart. The girls competed. They've done it all year," Keiser head coach Daniel Finn said. "They knew they could do it. We've lost the doubles point in two or three big matches this year, and it prepared them for this moment. They fought hard and made it happen."

Keiser earned both major individual post-match honors. Senior Violet Apisah of Sydney, Australia, received the Marvin P. Richmond Outstanding Player award — she was 4-0 in singles and, with her sister Patricia Apisah, 4-0 in doubles this week — and Finn was named NAIA National Coach of the Year.

Lindsey Wilson clinched the doubles point when Mayra Gisone and Cortal defeated Ella Sahnis and Aline Aveiro 7-5 at No. 2. Patricia Apisah tied the match at No. 3 when she beat Mariangeles Mateu 6-0, 6-1, and Sahnis, 4-0 in singles this week, put the Seahawks ahead to stay when she defeated Javiera Verdugo 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. Violet Apisah made it 3-1 with her 6-1, 6-3 victory against Gisone at No. 1.

Keiser, the No. 1 seed, finished 24-1 (20-0 road) and won its last 15. Lindsey Wilson, the No. 2 seed, lost for the first time in 17 matches and finished 19-2.

The national title is Keiser's second in women's tennis. The other one was in 2003, when it was known as Northwood University.

Notes:

• Melnikova was 18-0 in her final 23 singles matches and led in each of the five unfinished matches.

• Violet Apisah's singles victory was her 43rd in a row for Keiser. The streak began in February 2025.

• It was the ninth consecutive time that the No. 1 and 2 seeds met.

• This was Lindsey Wilson's third runner-up finish. The others were in 2016 and 2017. The Blue Raiders have yet win to a championship in this sport.

• Keiser is 3-0 against Lindsey Wilson at NAIA nationals. They also met in the 2024 and 2018 semifinals.

• This was the fifth time in the tournament's dual-match era (2000-present) that four schools played in the championship round. The other years were 2012, 2005, 2003 and 2001. Georgia Gwinnett defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 4-1 in the men's final Saturday morning.

• Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center played host to NAIA women's and men's nationals for the 22nd consecutive time.
